About the Department

The Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center (MHCREC) is located in Mills River, NC. It plays an integral role in supporting education, research, and extension in western North Carolina and in supporting agriculture and economic development in the region (North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia).

The Research Station at MHREC includes 377 acres of field research, greenhouse facilities, a maintenance shop, and 21 additional buildings. The Research Station currently has 11 full-time staff members and specializes in horticultural crop research including nursery crops, tomatoes, apples, peaches, hops, and other specialty crops.

The Center is a 23,500-square-foot facility with laboratories, an auditorium, conference rooms, and office space. The Center currently has 11 research/extension faculty (along with technicians, graduate students, research scholars, and post-docs) and personnel associated with the Western and North Central District Cooperative Extension, The Science House, and Future Farmers of America.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Station Superintendent will manage the operations of the Research Station at the MHCREC. As a secondary responsibility, the Superintendent will support facility operations for the Center.

As Research Station Superintendent, this position and their staff will manage projects and general station operations in support of faculty-driven research and extension initiatives at the Research Station located at the MHCREC. As Center Operations Manager, this position will support the Center including managing general operations, maintenance of buildings and grounds, repair, and renovation.

Superintendent of Research Station:
  • This position will lead operations of the research station in support of faculty-led research and extension projects across many important commodities.
  • Lead the search and selection committees that will hire research station support staff.
  • Direct and assign support staff to implement research projects, maintain investigators projects, collect and analyze data when appropriate, and work closely to coordinate the research, teaching, and extension activities occurring at the Station with the collaborative units.
  • Direct and oversee operations to ensure all Station activities are in compliance with all University, State, Federal, and other research policies. Work with project leaders to ensure that appropriate policies and assurances have been considered with respect to the infrastructure, equipment, and support dedicated or obligated in proposals.
  • Effectively manage the Station’s annual operational budget and prioritize repair and renovation needs as funds are available.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive work environment for station staff and all others working at the station

Operations Support for Research and Extension Center:
  • Serve as facilities liaison between the Center and CALS administration (NCARS, NCCES, and Department Heads) and supervise general operation, maintenance, repair, and renovation.
  • Efficiently and transparently manage the operational budget of the Center.
  • Serve on the Center space committee that makes recommendations to the CALS administration for the allocation of Center space.
  • Help to promote programs, activities, field days, accomplishments, and impacts with appropriate outlets.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; strong emphasis in agricultural-related field research management, or a related field with two (2) or more years of progressively responsible research management.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience in conducting field research and extending science-based knowledge, management skills, budgeting; budget justification and planning; administrative expertise, and experience such as personnel, purchasing, supervision, organization management, space management, database development/management, and project coordination.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s with strong emphasis in agricultural-related field research management, or a related field with five (5) or more years of progressively responsible research management.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience in the NC State System and experience at research station superintendent level.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain it within 60 days of start.
  • Within the first 6 months of hire, must obtain an NC Public Pesticide applicator license.
